Cave Painting (or drawing on the white chalk with a blackboard)

During our Unit of Inquiry on Materials, we started reading the book, 'Stig of the Dump' by Clive King. Stig is a caveman who lives at the bottom of an old quarry close to Barney's grandmother's house. Barney finds Stig one day when he falls through the roof of Stig's den. They become friends, even though they cannot talk to each other.

Since the quarry is no longer in use, people throw all their rubbish away down there; Stig is good at finding new ways in which to use old things.

On the same day that they cut down an enormous tree (getting warm once in the process) and then use it to start a fire (getting warm for the second time) Stig picks up a piece of charred wood and uses it to draw an amazing hunting scene on the chalk wall of the den.

Then we had a go at using charcoal and chalks to make our own hunting scene. We dusted the paper with charcoal powder and smudged it to give it a greyish background. Then we used charcoal and chalk to make our scene.



"I like yours because you did a nice cave painting. It looks like the horse is going very fast," said Swati.

Mapping the school

We asked ourselves; how can we show what our school looks like? After taking a walk around the school, we had a go at trying to make a record of everything; from the classrooms to the kitchen, the music room to the French rooms and the library.

How does it compare to the real thing?

Growing salt crystals

Azri had a go at growing some salt crystals.

This is how to do it:
Stir lots of salt into water until it dissappears (or dissolves).
Tie a piece of string onto a pencil and dangle it into the clear salty water.
Leave it in a warm place.
Wait to see what happens.

Memory Game

· You need a blindfold



· Put the cards face down on the table



· Then turn over two and feel them
· Keep on going until you find two that you think are the same
· If they are not the same you put them back and you don’t get another chance
· If they are right you get another turn
· The winner is the one who gets the most cards

This is an animal that goes under the sea. I used a plastic knife for his hair and he has a tiny tail made from a plastic lid.

My Red Car
This is a car and it's plastic and the tyre is rubber. The screws are metal.



What is it like?
It is kind of breakable.

My Scissors
These are scissors and they are made out of plastic. There is no metal. Sometimes they don't cut so well.



What is it like?
It is smooth and opaque.

My Magnetic Drawing Board
This is my magnetic drawing board. It is made of plastic but the end of the pen, it is metal. When you draw, lots of colours can come.

It is smooth and opaque.

My Yoghurt Cup
This is a yoghurt cup and it is made out of glass and you can see through it. It is transparent.



What is it like?
It is hard and can break.

My Sunglasses
These are sunglasses and it's made out of plastic.



What is it like?
It is non-flexible and kind of shiny.

the amazing domino machine

My pattern went green, blue, green, blue and it was nice. It is an abab pattern. I like the part when I knocked it down.
